What the writing is for

The notes on this site are general writing about art: how to look at paintings, how galleries work, and how to buy, frame and care for artworks. They are not professional advice. Nothing on the site is a valuation, an authentication, a condition assessment, legal or tax advice, or financial advice of any kind. For a valuable or fragile work, speak to a qualified conservator, framer, valuer or lawyer.

The artist notes and essays are independent writing based on public sources. They do not speak for any artist, estate, gallery or institution, and the site does not sell, represent or exhibit artists.

Accuracy

The writers check facts carefully and correct mistakes quickly, but information about prizes, opening hours, rules and organisations changes. Always confirm details with the gallery, prize or organisation concerned before making plans or decisions.

Partner links

Some pages carry labelled links to other businesses, and the site may earn a commission if you buy through them. Your purchase is a contract between you and that business, on its terms. The Hanging Wall is not responsible for other sites, their products, their prices or their delivery.

Please do not republish whole notes or the images without permission. Names of artists, artworks, institutions and prizes belong to their owners and are used here only to identify them.

Please do not attempt to break into the admin area, overload the servers, scrape the site in bulk or use the contact form for spam. Access may be blocked for anyone who does.
