Painter Marisa Purcell began her career in education in Queensland, before moving to Sydney in 1994. She has completed several degrees in Visual Arts, including a Masters of Visual Arts in 2008 at Sydney College of the Arts.
Her recent work embraces the surfaces and tones of pre-renaissance painting whilst reducing imagery into small bursts of form, responses on an intuitive level to what she witnesses. During a recent residency in Italy she developed her research into frescoes and the way in which colour fields can saturate and permeate the viewer. Her work inhabits a space of sacred attention. She believes the process of painting activates an intangible union between herself, the painting and the viewer.
